Hitting the Wall

"The wall" - I don't know what you think of when I write that. Maybe it's the surface you're looking at across the room, or maybe you think about the Berlin Wall that used to separate East and West Berlin. But no, it’s none of those. It’s a term that athletes use - mainly long distance runners. Let me explain: in my younger days (only a few years back - how I wish!) I used to do cross-country running. I had trained hard for my School’s Cross Country event, and after running a gruelling three miles - with only a half a mile to go - I had to run across a railway pedestrian bridge, which consisted of 100 steps up, and a few less down.
